The language of BDSM can be confusing to a newcomer.  Here are some terms you may hear to reference people in the Dominant position in the community.  Every term can have different meanings to different people, different Dominants prefer to be addressed in different ways, so it is always best to ask the person how they view themselves or what their definition is.  There are no right or wrong answers, like with most other areas of BDSM.  These are common definitions within the community, and in most cases reflect my personal view of each term.

The Dominant – The person who exercises control, leads, and directs in the D/s relationship. They are the one who makes the rules, provides the structure, and takes on the responsibility of both parties in the power exchange relationship.
